National Workshop on Women Leadership in Humanitarian Action and Disaster Risk Reduction

On March 31, 2022, the Women Humanitarian and Disaster Risk Reduction Platform (WHDRRP) organized a half-day national workshop on “Women Leadership in Humanitarian Action and Disaster Risk Reduction.” The objective of the workshop was to share the learning of the WHDRRP – issues, challenges, opportunities and barriers to women leadership from the different consultation workshops and webinars conducted at federal to provincial levels.

And to take forward the implementation of recommendations as a collective effort and emphasize the importance of fostering women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM). Mr. Anil Pokhrel, Chief Executive of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) highlighted the importance of women professionals in DRRM and engagement of the platform with NDRRMA.

The workshop had presentations from WHDRRP Federal level – Jwala Panday, Provincial level coordinators- Sudurpaschim -Sabitra Ghimire, Madhesh Pradesh – Malti Kumari Thakur, and Bagmati Province – Dr. Januka Neupane on learning, opportunities and challenges of women professionals in humanitarian action and DRR.

A panel discussion was also organized on “Women leadership in humanitarian action and DRR- Addressing the issues and challenges.” The panel discussion moderated by Ms. Krishna Karkee, Coordinator for the WHDRRP included Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Government of Nepal (GoN), Ms. Munaka Neupane, Program Director, Project Bank and DRR section, National Planning Commission (NPC), Ms. Sharu Joshi Shrestha, from the Nepal Policy Institute, and Inter-Generational Feminist Forum, Mr. Dinesh Gurung, Program Manager, Humanitarian Response and Disaster Risk Reduction, DCA, a Danish humanitarian and development organization and Mr. Hari Karki, Humanitarian Coordinator at United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Nepal.

The workshop was organized with support from the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), under the program on Building Resilience through Inclusive and Climate adaptive Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia-Pacific (BRDR), supported by SIDA.
